In this first year in business I am learning all kinds of new skills. This latest one is a good one to share, I think. It related to shooting on location, as I do pretty much all of the time.
I received a call from a lovely family who was visiting from Texas and they wanted to do a San Diego shoot. No problem! There are some really fantastic places to shoot here in SD so I gave them a few options and we settled on a local mission. Knowing that some of these places has specific policies regarding photography on their premises I called to find out what I needed to do and to make sure we would be OK to shoot there. No problem!
When we showed up for the shoot I again went and found someone and told them what we would be doing, told them I had copies of my insurance and business license if they needed it. No problem!
So, we got under way with our shoot. About 15 minutes into it we were stopped by a very unhappy woman all but yelling at us that we had to leave. Having taken the time to try to make sure we were all set to shoot there I was a bit surprised. She told me that although there is nothing on their website about their policies, and although the 3 people I had spoken with before her all told me it was OK, I should have known to email their information person to get things all squared away. Hm. Oh, and that the people I had spoken to were all volunteers, so what would they know. Again, hm.
I am not naming this place but you are more than welcome to send me a message if you want their information. It really is a gorgeous location to shoot at and I WILL be shooting there again at some point, but I can’t help but feel that they need to train their people a tad bit better. I also think they need to cop a nicer attitude towards the public since they rely on donations. And that’s my little rant.
Needless to say, we had to go finish the shoot someplace else (NOT a scenario you want to end up in) but all in all, I think it went well and we have some beautiful photos to prove it. G and her daughters were very gracious about the whole thing. To make it better, they are wonderful people. I just want G to live a little bit closer! With a little luck, though, I’ll be going to shoot for a couple of days in their neck of the woods.
Enjoy the photos!
